    • Singapore was founded in 1819 by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, the Lieutenant Governor of Bencoolen, Sumatra (a former British colony), in order to establish a new British trading port in Southeast Asia. The first population census taken in Singapore in January 1824 revealed a total population of 10,683. Singapore is now a cosmopolitan city island with a population of about 4 million people. Out of these 4 million people, about 20% are foreigners.

    The average age at first marriage for males is 30 years and for females is 26.9 years.
