Fast population growth was once a serious social problem but this has changed. The annual growth rate had decreased to 0.63 percent.

A notable trend in the population structure is that it is getting increasingly older and 7.9 percent of the total population was 65 years old or over. The number of people of productive age, 15 or above, rose from 25.2 million in 1980 to 37.8 million in 2002.
